Collector's Choice releases False Start
|
False Start is mostly famous for its first track, "The Everlasting First", which boasts the long-awaited union of the two black psychedelic superstars of the '60s, Arthur Lee and Jimi Hendrix (who co-wrote the tune and plays on it), but give the whole thing a listen and you'll discover this 1970 release is a severely underrated item in the Love album catalog. More cohesive than "Out Here", yet more eclectic than anything else the band ever did, "False Start " includes country rock ("Keep on Shining", '70s boogie ("Flying"), psychedelic soul ("Stand Out; Anytime") and many points in between, the last hurrah of an iconic band and bandleader. |

2 on 1 with Frankie Valli
|
Four new 2-on-1 CDs with Franki Valli. A great collection for any fan of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons! Street Date: June 24, 2008.
Solo / Timeless Frankie's first two solo albums were essentially Four Seasons projects sans group harmony, with Bob Crewe producing and Bob Gaudio, Charles Calello and Artie Schroeck arranging. And the material was every bit as strong (or even stronger) than on the group efforts, with the hits '(You re Gonna) Hurt Yourself'; 'The Proud One'; 'Can t Take My Eyes off You', and 'To Give (the Reason I Live)' highlighting the two releases. Also includes Frankie's original version of 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)', which went on to be a huge hit for the Walker Brothers.
Close-Up / Valli were originally released 1976. Close-Up was Frankie's first release for Private Stock, scored his first number one solo hit with 'My Eyes Adored You', and the rest of the record, with the usual 4 Seasons crew of Gaudio, Crewe and Callelo being joined by such talents as Jim Keltner, Pattie Austin and Clydie King, is top-notch. |
|
Meanwhile, 'Valli', which came out a year later in 1976, featured such guests as Lee Ritenour, Ernie Watts, Ray Parker, Jr. and members of the London Symphony Orchestra! Includes a 10-minute version of the hit 'Swearin' to God'.
Is the Word / Heaven Above Me were the result of Frankie's move to Warner Brothers and it coincided with his smash hit title song to the musical Grease, which headlines 'Is the Word',... Read more

Alan Price - Between Today and Yesterday
|
Available again. Street Date July 8, 2008.
Between Today and Yesterday is an autobiographical album released in 1974 by Alan Price. In its original LP format, side One was titled "Yesterday" and side Two was titled "Today."
The "Yesterday" side featured songs about the working class environment in which Price was raised. Musically, these songs drew heavily from pre-rock styles, bringing to mind music hall songs and working class anthems. Accordingly, the "Today" side contains songs about the adult Price, performed in a more contemporary style.
